Dr. Tim Yoon specializes in Spine Surgery. He has been at Emory University for over 20 years and has received numerous prestigious clinical and research awards. He is internationally renowned for his skills as a spine surgeon and has given numerous lectures to teach spine surgery both in the US and abroad. Recently, he was President of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS) and is the Chairman of the AOSpine Degenerative Knowledge Forum. His scope of practice encompasses a broad array of spinal surgery, including the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He combines surgical expertise and sound judgement to recommend the best treatment options. When non-surgical treatment is not working, Dr. Yoon is there to help his patients with the best surgery possible.

Cervical Spine

 

Dr. Yoon treats a variety of cervical (neck) spinal disorders, such as cervical disc herniation, nerve root or spinal cord compression, deformity, infection, and trauma. He excels in performing a variety of cervical spine surgeries. This includes ACDF, cervical corpectomy, laminoplasty, and cervical spine fusion.


Thoracic Spine

 

While most thoracic pain is not surgical, there are some that require surgical intervention. Dr. Yoon treats thoracic disc herniation, spinal cord compression, thoracic spinal root compression, scoliosis, and other disorders of the thoracic spine.


Lumbar Spine

 

The most common spinal problem is in the lumbar spine (low back region). Most low back pain conditions can be treated non-surgically, but at times, surgery is required. These conditions include stenosis, nerve root compression, disc herniation, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, and other conditions.

Swainsboro High School

Dr. Yoon was the top tennis player in Swainsboro High School. He won the regional debate and extemporaneous speech competitions. He attended the Governor’s Honors Program in Dahlonega. He was a National Merit Scholar and Star student of his school and county. He graduated in 1983 as the salutatorian of his class.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology. B.S Electrical Engineering

Dr. Yoon graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). There he won prizes in Physics and Electrical Engineering. His senior thesis was on measuring gastric emptying with electrical impedance. He joined the engineering honor’s society, Tau Beta Pi and the electrical engineering honor’s society, Eta Kappa Nu.

Yale University MD PhD School of Medicine

Dr. Yoon graduated with a combined MD and PhD degree. His PhD was in Immunobiology, studying the structure and function of the T-cell receptor and its interactions with the MHC class II molecule. He fell in love with surgery and decided to pursue a career combining a clinical practice in surgery with research and teaching.

UCSF Medical School Department of Orthopedic Surgery Residency

In 1995, Dr. Yoon went from Yale Medical School to University of California San Francisco School of Medicine (top ranked medical school at the time) to do his residency training in Orthopedic Surgery. He was fascinated by the complexity of spine surgery and how much of a positive effect it can have on patient’s lives. He decided to pursue specialty training in Spine Surgery.

RUSH Medical Center Spine Fellowship

Dr. Yoon learned both Degenerative and Deformity surgery at Rush Medical Center. There he learned from the top spine surgeons in the country and graduated eager to apply his knowledge and skill to help people.
